Talk with your family about hearing aids

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

The holidays are here and the present a great opportunity to spend time with your family. Look around your family gathering, how many people are wearing hearing aids? I just left a gathering where three people were wearing hearing aids.I used the opportunity to talk about hearing aids and I can tell you the family members were excited to talk.

People who have hearing aids like to talk about the highs and lows of using them. I encourage everyone to use the holidays as a time to talk with family members about hearing loss.

I learned today that my wife’s mother spent over $6,000 for her Phonank hearing aids and that (of course) she was not able to apply insurance to this. How incredibly expensive! She was happy for the opportunity to vent a bit about the cost of the system.

Look around this holiday and engage people who wear hearing aids in a conversation about the aids. They will appreciate it!

Hearing aids for teens

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

One topic that is talked about a great deal regarding hearing aids but could always use more discussion is hearing aids and teens. There are millions of teens across the world that could use the help of hearing aids or who are currently using hearing aids. The other thing that all of these teenagers across the world share is the difficulty of being a teen and growing up.

It is not easy being a teenager. There is a huge amount of peer pressure that comes with being a teenager and having to wear a hearing aid does not help things. It is frustrating and sad to say but to this day people are still made fun of for wearing hearing aids. Much the same way that individuals are criticized for wearing glasses, teenagers with hearing aids often find themselves the target of ridicule.

This fact being acknowledged, I would like to focus on ways to help teenagers. How can they be less concerned or even proud of wearing their hearing aids? The best way to combat the criticism is to educate everyone in the world about the importance of hearing and that hearing aids are no laughing matter. This is a massive task.

What other ways have people found to help teenagers who wear hearing aids? What are some ideal coping tricks? Please share!

Hearing aids in the rain, waterproof hearing aids

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I can’t help but write a pice about how hearing aids perform in the rain since I live in Seattle. We are deep into November and the rains are coming down hard here. It makes me wonder which hearing aids perform better than others in the rain. Should people who live in the rainy Northwest buy a certain kind of hearing aid over another due to the wetness?

From most on my research, it seems that the emphasis is on preventing hearing aids from getting wet rather than which hearing aids perform better in the rain. So I choose instead to focus on finding Waterproof hearing aids. There is a model out called the Hunter being promoted by advancedhearing.com that claims to be waterproof. Does anyone have any experience with this brand of hearing aids?

At the end of the day, the biggest challenge with waterproof hearing aids is that the sound needs to enter the device somehow. True waterproofness defeats the nature of a hearing aid.

I am upset to report that for now hearing aids should be kept out of the rain and are not waterproof. Please write in if I am wrong and missing something. I hope I am!

Loans for hearing aids

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

We have discussed so many times how it is very hard to get insurancen to cover hearing aids. This is still the case and it will likely not change any time soon. This makes it a reasonable idea to write a bit about securing loans for heairng aids.

We all know that a decent hearing aid can easily cost $3000. Most people simply do not have $3000 lying around. And it is not acceptable to not get a hearing aid simply because you do not have the money on hand. Hearing aids are crucial for a better life for yourself and your family.

Loans can be recieved from banks and from the office of your audiologist. This is great news. The challenge you must face is to insure you do not pay too high of an interest rate. We would set a goal for yourself to not pay any more than 7% interest on your hearing aid loan.

If any readers have insight on getting loans for hearing aids, please mention them to us hear on this blog.

Hearing aids in California

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Let’s take a quick look at hearing aids in the Sunshine state - California.

On some level, hearing aids in California are just like heairng aids anywhere else. I suppose there may be a focus on the hearing aids ability to deal with water since California is so famous for pools and beaches.

But the area that makes sense to diagnose is the rules around insurance for hearing aids in California. Has the Governator - Arnold - passed any state wide laws that may affect hearing aids in the state?

It appears that hearing aids in California are not covered just as they are not in other states. This is so frustrating to me to even write. It is an absolute shame that the states do not force insurance companies to pay for hearing aids when they are needed.

Readers, please add anything you may know about hearing aids and Clifornia. Perhaps there is some good and unique information I am not aware of.
